Pachisi

Pachisi is one of the oldest known board games, originating in ancient India, with roots that likely go back to at least the 4th century CE and possibly even earlier cultural traditions involving dice games. It was played on a cross‑shaped cloth board using cowrie shells instead of dice, and its name comes from the Hindi word pachīs, meaning “twenty‑five,” the highest score possible in a throw. The game held great cultural importance and is even connected to stories in the Indian epic Mahabharata, showing how deeply it was embedded in society. During the 16th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar famously elevated Pachisi to a royal spectacle by playing it on a life‑sized board in his palace courtyard, sometimes using people as pieces. Over time, the game spread beyond India and inspired many modern games, including Ludo and Parcheesi, which are now played all over the world.
